Serious questions need to be asked of the justice system when two parents can get away with giving cocaine to their own baby!
Normally, just being in possession of a drug like marijuana is enough to get you arrested and put in jail. Using a drug like cocaine is, of course, even more serious. So surely giving cocaine to a baby is probably one of the worst things you can do?
Well, not according to the latest court decision, ruling that Krystin and Somchai Lisaius were free to go after mistakenly allowing their 4-month old child to ingest cocaine via breastmilk.
Krystin and Somchai used to work as TV personalities in Tuscon, Arizona. Earlier this year, the couple dashed to the hospital after their baby’s eyes started to roll back into her head. They claimed to not know what was wrong with the child, but suspicions were raised when the pair refused to let doctors from two different hospitals perform any blood tests.
Fortunately, a urine sample was acquired from the child which proved the presence of cocaine in her body. The police soon became involved in the case, and it didn’t take them long to discover that the pair had been partying pretty hard the night before.
Krystin claimed that she thought the drug would be out of her system as 12 hours had passed since the party. Unfortunately, she was wrong.
Once news of the story broke, the pair lost their jobs, but that actually turned out to be the worst thing that happened to them. The case went to court, where the couple pleaded guilty to child endangerment in order to reduce the severity of the charges against them.
After this plea, the charges of abuse and drug possession were dropped and the pair were handed a sentence of one year of probation. They would have had a 30-day jail term, but this was also suspended after shrewd negotiation on the part of their lawyer.
Fortunately, the baby is now doing fine and didn’t suffer any long-lasting damage from this incident, but there’s no telling how much more serious it could have been. This court decision has shocked a lot of people, as it was clear that Krystin and Somchai behaved very irresponsibly, and we can only hope that they have learned their lesson.
Somchai gave the following statement:
“I just want to apologize for putting us, for putting our family in this terrible position. I know we made a mistake I know that we are the ones solely responsible. We learned the greatest lesson of our life, and I assure you from the bottom of my heart, this will never ever repeat.”
Let’s hope he’s telling the truth.
