Scientists have revealed that the side you sleep on can have a big effect on the way your digestive system operates, and it’s all down to gravity. Just think about it: when you lie on your side, your whole body is rotated, including your digestive organs. This means that your stomach, and all of its acids and gastric juices, gets flipped, and those juices can actually start to flow back up your esophagus, causing heartburn and acid reflux.
The important thing to note is that those negative things will only happen if you sleep on your right side. If you sleep on the left, the gastric acids will remain perfectly in place inside the stomach, helping you to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
