Things have changed a lot over the last century, especially in the dating world. The rise of equal rights and the creation of modern marvels like Tinder means that dating someone in 2016 is so different from dating someone in 1916. Still, there are some things that never change, and our grandparents have lent us some relevant relationship advice in the list below.
1. If a man asks a woman out, he should pay.
It’s an old-fashioned idea, but some old-fashioned ideas aren’t all that bad. If a guy offers to pay for a date, it at least shows that he has a respectful, gallant side and is prepared to be a gentleman.
2. Good partners are able to laugh at themselves.
The older generations have learned from experience and they know how important humor can be. When times get tough, people need to be able to laugh at themselves in order to break the ice and keep on going.
3. Listen to your heart, not your friends.
Listening to what everyone else is saying and acting based on the things you hear is a surefire way to ruin a relationship. Your friends and family can offer advice, but only you know how you truly feel. Listen to your heart if you want to make the right decisions.
4. If you don’t find your partner attractive, move on.
We only live once and we can’t waste time with people who we don’t really feel 100% attracted to. Many people get into relationships and hope that, with time, attraction will develop, but this is rarely the case.
5. A gentleman is the only man for you.
This one is still true in modern times. In fact, it might be more true than ever before. Nobody wants to date a rude jerk who has no sense of decency. Find a guy that will treat you right and hold onto him.
6. Always leave him wanting more.
These days, relationships move fast. Modern people have very short attention spans and not a lot of patience, so it can be easy to want to get physical early on in the relationship. However, there’s a lot o be said for taking your time. It might be hard, but waiting for that first kiss will help to make it even more special.
7. Love will find a way.
Love can be cruel. There are times when we think we’ve lost the only person in the world who could make us happy, or that we’ll simply never be lucky enough to find that person. Luckily, our grandparents have been around long enough to know the truth, and they know that love always finds a way. Things do even out and good things do happen to everyone. You might need a little patience, but always remember to keep the faith.
8. Make a decision.
Again, we all only live once and we all have a limited amount of time on this Earth, so it’s important to use that time wisely. If your relationship has reached some kind of impasse, don’t just sit around and wait for things to magically get better. Make a decision. Either break it off or try to fix it. Doing nothing is just a waste of everyone’s time.
9. Don’t be afraid to be single.
Too many of us feel compelled to be in relationships all the time, but it’s important to remember that single life can be great! You have no obligations or responsibilities and are free to do whatever you like. It can be a lot of fun to stay single and you shouldn’t feel the need to be dating non-stop.
10. What’s done is done.
Our grandparents know that when a relationship is over, it’s over. The idea of staying friends might seem nice on paper, but it very rarely works out in real life. It’s important for both partners to move on and try to find happiness elsewhere, rather than living in the past.
